The FIA has officially confirmed that it has approved the Andretti team’s application to participate in Formula 1.
In a statement, the federation said that after announcing the call for applications for Formula 1 in early 2023, they received many questions, but that only four candidates were admitted to the second selection phase. The FIA has not mentioned these teams by name, but apparently in addition to Andretti we are also talking about Hitech, Craig Pollock’s Formula Equal project and LKY SUNZ from Southeast Asia.
After conducting an extensive assessment, including sporting, technical, financial, environmental sustainability and social criteria, the FIA concluded that only Andretti Formula Racing LLC’s application met all the strict requirements.
FIA representatives concluded that the team has the financial and technical capabilities to compete in the championship at a competitive level. The FIA transferred its findings to FOM management so that they could start a substantive discussion about the commercial conditions of the Andretti team’s participation in Formula 1.
As for the remaining teams whose entries were not selected, the FIA informed them of the results of their assessment.
Mohammed bin SulayemPresident of the FIA: “The Federation has established a system of strict criteria that a candidate for participation in the World Championship must initially meet at the application processing stage. Our aim is to ensure that at this stage, following a rigorous audit process, we only approve applications from candidates who meet the established criteria and can demonstrate that they can add value to our sport.
The FIA is required to approve applications from applicants who meet all requirements and we have followed this process and determined that the application submitted by Andretti Formula Racing LLC is admissible for the next stage of consideration. By taking this decision, the federation is acting in accordance with the European Union directive regulating participation in motorsport competitions.
Andretti Formula Racing LLC was the only bidder to meet all criteria. I congratulate Michael Andretti and his team on the approval of their project. I would also like to thank all other teams for their interest and participation in the selection process.
The application process comes amid a positive response to the FIA’s Powertrain Regulation, which will come into force in 2026 and attract manufacturers such as Audi, Honda and Ford, as well as interest from Porsche and General Motors.
“I would like to thank all members of the FIA team involved in the application process for their tireless efforts to ensure that all applicants’ applications are fully assessed.”
