In Melbourne, Mercedes repeated their best result of the season with 27 points. The team’s chief strategist, James Vowles, believes the result owes more to the track characteristics than to the car’s progress.
James Vowles: “On different tracks, the balance of power between Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren is changing. The characteristics of a particular track and the level of downforce required will suit some cars and not others.
We are also moving forward. In every race we try to understand the car better, to take a step forward, but when we evaluate the situation in Melbourne we have to admit that we lost a second to Ferrari in qualifying and that Leclerc was out of reach in the race.
We were the most competitive in Bahrain where the gap from first place wasn’t that big.
With every race we move forward, we have a plan – what to test, what to try. Of course our rivals have such a plan, but the most important thing is to close the gap with the leaders.”
