Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton called on Formula 1 media figures such as former ‘race royal’ boss Bernie Ecclestone and multiple world champions Jackie Stewart and Nelson Piquet to be silent.
All three have repeatedly spoken ambiguously about Hamilton, and Piquet has been accused of racism against the British driver.
“I don’t know why we keep giving these old voices a platform. They speak for our sport, but we want to take it to the next level, and they don’t reflect who we are now and where we plan to go.
If we want to grow our audience in the United States and South Africa, we need to give young people a platform. They are more in tune with today’s times and who we are trying to be.
These old voices, subconsciously or consciously, disagree that people like me should be in this sport. Discrimination must not be projected.
I don’t think a day has passed in the last two weeks where older people who aren’t in our sport or haven’t been relevant to our sport for decades have tried to say negative things and to humiliate me,” Hamilton quoted in the Daily. Mail.
