Aston Martin F1 chief engineer Luca Furbatto spoke about how the team is preparing for the transition to Honda engines, which will take place in 2026. But the first phase of cooperation with Japanese motorists has already begun.
Luca Furbatto: “The future partnership was announced last May and it is a very exciting time. Our first meetings with Honda began immediately after this announcement and we now communicate regularly. Obviously the project is at a very early stage, but the process of creating the 2026 engine is quickly gaining momentum.
We exchange ideas and the Japanese side responds incredibly quickly. As we move forward, the intensity of collaboration will increase as deadlines are tight and in some cases simply cannot be rescheduled.
The regulations for the new generation of engines inspire everyone, because they offer excellent possibilities. Due to the way it is designed, teams will have to create cars with highly efficient aerodynamics to compensate for the reduced powertrain performance. It’s a real challenge, but everyone is on an equal footing. It only depends on ourselves whether we can cope with the task better than others.
There are still more than two seasons until 2026 and we want to achieve success in the next two years. We also want to put in a good performance in the remaining races of this season to strengthen our position in the Constructors’ Championship. On the one hand, 2026 promises excellent prospects, but it would be wrong to bet only on this year.
This is not to say that our goals are mutually exclusive: we need to improve the team’s performance in many areas, and the knowledge we gain over the next two years will be of great importance as we prepare for 2026.
To succeed in Formula 1 you must work with complete dedication and constantly look for opportunities to improve in all areas. To do this, you need to leave your comfort zone – if you relax, your opponents will be able to improve before you.
This process never stops. Even if you reach the top and win championships, you have to keep pushing. When you are passionate about this work, the constant desire to improve becomes natural, and personally I am always inspired by technical creativity at the highest level.”
