The Losail circuit in Qatar is not only new for season debutant Logan Sargent, but also for his more experienced teammate Alex Albon. The Williams drivers are looking forward to the upcoming stage with interest and expect to compete with their rivals.
Dave Robson, Chief Race Engineer: “Qatar will return to the championship calendar after the first race in 2021. The configuration of the route remained virtually unchanged, although the asphalt was completely renewed. This likely led to a significant change in performance.
It is incredibly hot in Qatar at the moment. Although most sessions take place in the evening, temperatures will still reach +30C. Strong gusts of wind, especially during the day, will also affect the speed of cars.
One of the three remaining sprint stages of the season awaits us. This will probably be the most difficult stage, given the new asphalt and the sessions that take place in the evening. Add to that the fact that Alex and Logan had never performed here before. Although they have done a lot of preparation on the simulator, the upcoming stage will test their skills as the evening qualifying will take place immediately after the only training of the day in warm conditions.”
Alex Albon: “I’m looking forward to going to Qatar this week. I haven’t driven on this track before, so I want to get this experience. Judging from the simulator, the circuit is quite interesting to drive, and the 2021 race showed that there are opportunities for competition here, especially since a sprint awaits us this weekend.
There is still a night race ahead and another stage in extreme heat, but we are ready for it. Let’s see what we achieve.”
Logan Sargent: “I’m looking forward to competing in Qatar for the first time this weekend. After the race in Japan I returned to Grove where I worked in the simulator and with the engineers to get to know the track better.
Sprint stages are always interesting and offer more possibilities. We want to start the weekend in training without any problems and gradually build up the pace.”
