We wrote that the FIA has rejected the application of New Zealand car manufacturer Rodin Cars to participate in Formula 1. In an interview with Racer, Rodin Cars founder David Dicker said he was in negotiations to purchase AlphaTauri, but the price of around $1 billion seemed excessive to him.
David Dicker: “I have been in discussions to purchase AlphaTauri, but I do not consider this a commercially viable option. Such transactions must be viewed from a commercial point of view. The Formula 1 guys are motorsport experts, but not business experts. I want to buy a team, but I’m not willing to pay $800-900 million for AlphaTauri.
I have an interesting project, but I can’t talk about it yet. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get into Formula 1, but I’m not going to give up. This is my character. When I want to achieve something, I look for an opportunity to do so. If it doesn’t work the first time, I look for another option or options.
I made a mistake when Williams was put up for sale. I could easily buy them, but I hadn’t quite assessed the strategic landscape correctly. I spoke to Williams, saw all the numbers, sat through the presentations, made them an offer and all that, but was distracted by other options – Sauber and Haas have been in and out of the market for a number of years, they could probably be bought for a lot less money, which would make a lot more sense.”
