It is a mistake to believe that among Formula 1 drivers, only Lewis Hamilton won at the Qatar circuit. Nico Hulkenberg also climbed to the top step of the podium there, but that was a long time ago, in 2009, when he competed for the ART team in the Asian GP2 series.
Nico Hulkenberg: “I have good memories of that weekend! (Nico then won both qualifying and the race) And the result wasn’t bad, and the track was interesting, as far as I remember. Very fast, with an organic configuration. It was necessary to actively attack the curbs, and this was a pleasure.
In general, I liked everything then, so I already want to get started as soon as possible. Admittedly, it is a bit warm here and I would like the car to be faster, but in general everything is fine. It is always better to know the track a little than to start from scratch.
Although of course I have been here for a long time, so I have to refresh those memories quickly, because we have a sprint ahead of us, so there is only one training tomorrow. It won’t be easy and it will be quite a hectic weekend for everyone. However, the circuit has not changed much since then, and especially the changes have affected the environment: the paddock, the grandstands, the infrastructure, and it is very nice to see that.
If we talk about what you need to achieve with the car, you need more downforce and good balance. Everything is as usual. I think we have a chance to show good speed.
Of course we look forward to new products that have been in the works for a long time, but we only get them in Austin. This is the last weekend of competing with the car in the old version, so we will try to cope with our tasks somehow.”
