Commenting on Nelson Piquet Sr’s racist remark and the subsequent ban on Formula 1 paddocks, Max Verstappen said Piquet was “definitely not a racist”, but agreed that the language he used to Lewis Hamilton was “very offensive”.
Max Verstappen: “Of course everyone here is against racism. This is clear and there is nothing to add. The wording Nelson used, though perhaps because of the difference in cultures, they said in childhood, was incorrect. Let this be a lesson for the future. This word should not be used as it is very offensive.
I spent some time with Nelson and I can say that he is definitely not a racist. He is nice and a good person. In the statement he published, this word can be interpreted in two ways, but it is better not to use it at all.
It’s not just about this word, not about those words that start with the letter “n” – I think it’s wrong to use offensive expressions against a person of any skin color. And we have to work on that all over the world, not just in Formula 1 with Lewis, but with everyone in the world.”
Verstappen, who called Pique his father-in-law, said he hadn’t discussed the subject with him…
Max Verstappen: “I don’t think I should tell him what’s good and what’s bad. He made a statement and realized. Who am I to lecture him? It is unlikely that this will change anything. I think he realized he was using the wrong word.
Paddock ban? I think in such situations you should talk to a person and not impose prohibitions that will not change anything. If you are arguing or arguing with someone, you can talk and apologize. I don’t think a three-time world champion should be banned from the paddock.”
