Max Verstappen could become the first driver in Formula 1 history to win the world title in Saturday’s sprint, but on Thursday he said he still doesn’t like the format.
Max Verstappen: “Whether I win the title this weekend or next weekend doesn’t matter. I know that if I perform well on Saturday I will win the title early that day, but now we are focused on solving the main task: having a good weekend.
Personally, I prefer the regular race format. I like him better. Especially qualifications, when you attack the limit of your capabilities, because you were able to find this limit during training.
For example, if you only have one practice session before qualifying at Suzuka, your chance of crashing your car increases significantly. The sprint format is not that interesting. The sprint race reflects the balance of power in Sunday’s Grand Prix. You already understand who will be good in the race and who will fall back, which takes away the intrigue.
With the traditional format you know that some cars will be fast in qualifying and others will perform better in the race, but you don’t know what the balance of power will be.
After the sprint race, such intrigue no longer exists. You realize that if nothing happens, this driver will win the race.”
