Max Verstappen won qualifying in Qatar on Friday and will start from pole position for the tenth time this season in Sunday’s race. The Red Bull Racing driver was pleased with the car’s speed, but noted that the new asphalt on the Losail circuit caused the car to constantly slide.
Max’s teammate Sergio Perez failed to reach the qualifying final for the eighth time this season.
Max Verstappen (1st): “Great start to the weekend! But it was difficult to drive because of the new asphalt – there was not enough used rubber on the track, which caused the car to skid a lot. As soon as you overdid it and pressed the accelerator too hard, the rear wheels were torn out of trajectory.
Of course I’m very happy to have won pole position – a good day for us. I want to win on Sunday. It is a natural desire to start first. But first you need to have a successful Saturday. In my opinion our car is fast, but tomorrow it will be more difficult to make the tires work.
Like I said, a good start to the weekend and the car is fast. That’s all I can hope for.”
