The McLaren car looked second in speed to Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, but Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were unable to take advantage as both exceeded track limits and their best times were lost.
Oscar Piastri (6th): “It’s a shame I lost third position, but that’s how it happened. On my last attempt I overdid it a bit. Of course I regret it, because the car was fast. But tomorrow we will try again, because there is another qualifying and a sprint on Saturday. Let’s see what we can do.
The competition is very intense, the results are tight and mistakes are easy to make as the track is very slippery. So we have only made it more difficult for ourselves, but we will do everything we can and try to earn points, also tomorrow.”
Lando Norris (10th): “The car started to spin and I had to adjust the trajectory, which put me off the track. The car had a good pace and the team did everything right, but I made a mistake.
Although I know we will have the chance to solve the problem, all I can think about now is that I should have done my job well today, i.e. showed good lap times and expected no mistakes. But I couldn’t ignore it, so the day didn’t go well for me.”
