Ferrari team leader Frederic Vasseur is skeptical about the arrival of the Andretti Cadillac project in Formula 1…
Frederic Vasseur: “It’s no secret that I don’t really like this idea. When the idea of an eleventh team was announced, Honda announced its departure from Formula 1 and Renault was on the brink. It could have turned out that only Mercedes and Ferrari engines would have remained in the championship. And we opened the door to the eleventh team, on the condition that it could add something important to Formula 1, especially in terms of the power unit.
You have to remember that three or four years ago almost half of the teams were almost bankrupt. Life is a cycle and we don’t know what will happen until 2030. And I think Formula 1 could find itself in a very difficult situation with the arrival of the eleventh team, unless the newcomer brings enormous added value to Formula 1 adds.
I haven’t spoken to Andretti’s management, but the first thing I would like to ask is: what will Formula 1 win? We already have an American Haas F1 team, we have an American driver. What is Andretti’s value?
If you have eleven teams, you are more vulnerable than if you have ten teams. When a company grows, everyone is optimistic. But I’m not sure it will always be this way. And we must remember this. Unfortunately, we are not learning from past mistakes, and that is a big problem.”
