Teams may be required to make three pit stops

Due to potential safety concerns, the FIA may require teams to make a minimum of three pit stops during Sunday’s race.

On Saturday morning, the FIA released an official statement about damage found on tires that had been used for more than twenty laps on Friday. It is believed that they may be caused by high-frequency vibrations of the tire sidewall when interacting with the 50mm “pyramid” curbs.

Due to a possible safety issue, the following measures have been taken:

1. Track departure restrictions in turns 12-13 are being revised.

2. Once the restrictions are revised, a 10-minute practice session will take place at 4:00 PM local time to allow riders to adapt to the changes. The sprint qualifying starts 20 minutes later than planned (4:20 PM local time).

3. After the sprint (19 laps) a tire analysis is carried out to decide whether further action needs to be taken before the Grand Prix.

4. Should the problem persist, the following guidance will be issued for Sunday’s Grand Prix:

– the distance for one set of tires may not exceed 20 laps.

– All drivers must make at least three pit stops during the race to change tires.

Pirelli and the FIA will carry out extensive research and modeling to determine with complete certainty the causes of this problem and to prevent it in the future.
