The first practice at Silverstone was on a wet or dry track and the Red Bull Racing cars were in the pits for most of the time and the team drivers only completed three laps. The leader, Christian Horner, explained why this was.
Christian Horner: “It is frustrating that we have done so few laps, but we have to save the tires because we will have to use such rubber in the 2nd practice and possibly even in the third practice. That’s why the cars stayed in the garage.
We saw that the asphalt was already drying up halfway through the circle, but it remained wet in the second half. I hope the next session goes a little better. But at this stage of the weekend, teams simply cannot afford to use up a few sets of tires.
Max wasn’t so happy that he had to hit the track after all. We can’t risk the car too much, because we don’t have many spare parts, but even if you manage to drive at least two or three turns on dry asphalt, you can gather some useful information.
This weekend we got some new things to our car, first of all they have to do with aerodynamics, these elements are not very noticeable but they are in the area of the side pontoons and the engine housing. We hope they will help us improve on this type of track. But to understand how effective they are, you need to spend at least one normal race.
We know that Mercedes has also prepared new things, in particular they have updated the underside of the car and on this track with its very flat surface they can go very fast. Here they can apply the optimal settings to suit the W13, as their car has already shown a glimpse of speed.
In my opinion in Montreal at the end of the first segment they showed about the same lap time as Max Verstappen. Given the updates Mercedes has prepared for this weekend, I don’t rule out that they will be very fast.”
Horner also reiterated that Sergio Perez has the opportunity to compete with his partner and claim victory in races: “In Montreal he was just unlucky, but he still has a shot at the title, because in theory he is behind his partner can play a few races. At the same time, it is still far from the end of the championship, even less than half of the season. In addition, there are stages with sprint races ahead, so there are still a lot of points to play. Sergio is now on top form and you just have to keep attacking.
Pérez has both professional maturity and experience, he was a perfect fit for the team last year, although he struggled because that car didn’t suit him very well, but now the RB18 suits his driving style much better. His confidence grew, he believed in himself and we see that.”
