At the circuit in Qatar, George Russell stayed ahead of Lewis Hamilton, his Mercedes teammate, for the second day in a row. He was slightly faster than the seven-time world champion in yesterday’s qualifying and much faster in Saturday’s qualifying session before the sprint. Today George showed the 4th result, and Lewis only the 12th, so he did not qualify for the final session.
George Russell: “If you had told me before the start of the weekend that we would show 4th place in one of the qualifiers, we would probably have agreed to accept, knowing that the track conditions would be difficult. But yesterday’s second place and fourth place today are truly excellent performances.
We knew the McLarens would be fast this weekend and I congratulate Oscar, but he has done a great job all season. We have an interesting race ahead of us on Saturday evening and honestly I think the track changes that the FIA have made are having a positive effect.”
Lewis Hamilton has a completely different mood: “Today everything went differently than yesterday. Yesterday the car seemed very normal, and I don’t know what happened – maybe the wind changed, or it was because the temperature was much higher, but the balance became completely different. The balance is bad now.
In addition, new problems arose with regard to the boundaries of the track. I had them mainly in Turn 13, where changes were made. But everyone is on equal footing.
I personally just have a lot of problems with balance and severe understeer. I can’t say for sure why this happens. But the car behaves differently.”
