Formula 3: Zach O’Sullivan takes pole at Silverstone

Zach O’Sullivan has won round four of the Formula 3 season at Silverstone. This is the first pole of his career for the British rider and the first of the season for his Carlin team. Together with him, Arthur Leclerc will start Sunday’s race from the front row, losing 0.027 seconds.

It could start to rain during the session, so the riders weren’t sitting outside in the pits and went straight out onto the track to have time to check the time on a dry surface. After two warm-up rounds, the participants of the youth series began to attack with full force.

Chao Collett showed the first competitive time. Victor Martin and Grégoire Sosi, who followed him, could not beat the Brazilian, but Arthur Leclerc, Cush Maini and Oliver Berman managed to do it, who led the protocol.

Zdenek Chovanek, who returned to Formula 3 to replace David Schumacher, interfered with Isaac Hadjar, leading to Hitech’s dismay. A few laps later, Hajjar almost lost control of the car in corner ninth. The weekend is still tough for Isaac as it was already known before the start of qualifying that he would lose three places at the start of Saturday’s race for breaking the starting practice procedure.

After a run of six or seven laps, the riders headed to the pits for a new set of tires. At this point, protocol was led by Kush Maini, who improved Berman’s time by a tenth.

Ten minutes before the end of the session, the riders returned to the track on new tires. They again needed two warm-up laps, after which decisive attempts began. Chao Collet once again led protocol, but was soon overtaken by Arthur Leclerc and then Zach O’Sullivan. Zane Maloney showed the third time and pushed Collet to the fourth line.

Until the end of qualifying, no one could beat the time of Zach O’Sullivan, who starts Sunday’s race from pole position. On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. Rhys Ushijima of Van Amersfort Racing will start the race tomorrow from pole position.
