Sulayem: We couldn’t reject Andretti Cadillac’s offer

Early this week, the FIA officially approved the Andretti Cadillac team’s application, but Formula 1 greeted the federation’s decision very coolly. In Qatar, FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem said the application could not be rejected because Andretti Cadillac met all the requirements.

Mohammed bin Sulayem: “We conducted due diligence, although the process was not easy. The application process was a major step forward for the FIA. Regulations allow twelve teams to compete, and most circuits have pits that can accommodate more than twelve teams. We’re currently filming a Hollywood movie and there’s another crew with us almost all the time. The performance of a new participant can only benefit the sport.

Look at the situation from the FIA’s point of view. What is our mission? What are our goals? Our mission is very clear: to promote and develop motorsport, and to provide equal conditions for everyone. But of course there is also a commercial side to the matter, which we respect.

We asked the right questions to the folks at Cadillac and Andretti, and when they gave us the answers, we simply couldn’t deny their application because they met all the formal requirements. Their arrival will benefit Formula 1 and I am confident they will be successful.”
