The Mercedes drivers started from excellent positions and could easily reach the podium, but collided already in the first corner. And while George Russell continued the race, despite having to make an unscheduled pit stop and replace a damaged front wing, Lewis Hamilton’s car was badly damaged.
“Today we missed the opportunity to earn a lot of points,” said the seven-time world champion. “At that moment the adrenaline was through the roof and I didn’t understand what was happening at all. I suppose that when I attacked George from behind, it was entirely possible that he simply had nowhere to escape.
This is just a very unfortunate coincidence and I am willing to take responsibility. The team continues to give their best and when things like this happen it is very frustrating. Let’s hope George can at least finish in the top ten.”
