Marko: Verstappen is mentally very strong

Max Verstappen has taken six wins in the nine races already held in the season and is 46 points ahead of his teammate Sergio Pérez, who is in 2nd place in the individual standings. And his lead over Charles Leclerc, the best of Ferrari’s representatives, has grown to 49 points.

According to Helmut Marko, motorsport advisor for Red Bull, the superiority in mental preparation is even more important than Verstappen has always distinguished.

“Max can perform incredibly under pressure, he is always in control of the race and knows how to act to keep the rubber and brakes effective,” Marco told Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung. And he is mentally very strong. As soon as he conquers the next corner at the limit of his possibilities, he immediately leaves it in the past and always sees one step ahead, mentally he has already passed the next corner.

At the same time, despite his youth, success in sports and business, he remains an absolute pragmatist and does not float in the clouds.

The forecast for Saturday does not rule out the possibility of qualifying on a wet track, but according to Marco this factor will not affect Max’s competitiveness: “If it rains, Verstappen will come. Unlike everyone else, he doesn’t need time to adjust. He exits the pits and immediately goes a second faster than anyone else.

But he doesn’t need the rain because then it’s not so much fun to race at Silverstone, but when the track is wet we know we have all the cards in our hands.

Last year, before the British Grand Prix, we also had a good stock of points, but after the race in Hungary all the advantage melted away. It can happen quickly, but this year we have been able to fight for wins on almost every track and that is encouraging.

The fight with Ferrari is on par, and it just depends on some nuances in which direction the pendulum will swing. If the job suits them, they can gain a noticeable advantage. It doesn’t bring back the best memories of some races from last year, when Hamilton was clearly faster than Max – we remember that well.

Ferrari has a very fast car and in Canada the battle for victory lasted until the last lap of the race. The same will happen again at Silverstone and in the next races I have no doubts about it.”
