Vowles: We had high expectations, but they didn’t materialize

The Qatar Grand Prix was a difficult test for the Williams drivers, and Logan Sargent could not cope with it, he simply did not have enough power. Alex Albon, who earned points in the sprint, finished only 13th on Sunday. James Vowles, head of the British team, commented on the weekend’s disappointing results.

James Vowles: “We had mixed feelings this weekend. We had a successful Saturday sprint, earning two valuable points, on a circuit that in theory should not have suited our car. But if the FW45 had optimal settings on Saturday, the same cannot be said for Sunday.

We didn’t claim any points during the race; furthermore, our lead over our rivals in the Constructors’ Championship has been reduced. This happened because of some difficulties we encountered during the Grand Prix. Our expectations were high, but they were not justified because the pace did not meet our expectations.

Speaking of Logan, he wasn’t feeling too well, but he had been feeling a little unwell since the beginning of the weekend. He tried to overcome this, but on a circuit that will punish you very severely if you allow your body to dehydrate, and where the load is very high, he started to feel sick.

Logan’s condition was worse than the others, but he held on as long as he could, but eventually he had to leave the race.

In many ways this applies to Alex. He also had problems with dehydration, but he is doing well now, and both will be in good shape in Austin. But this race was very difficult.

Alfa Romeo has closed the gap to us in the Constructors’ Championship and there are now not many points separating the two teams. We understand this, but we know that the end of the season is still far away and that we still have a lot to do to maintain the 7th place for which we have fought so hard.

In Austin and Brazil, the weekend program includes sprint races, and a series of three consecutive stages, separated by weekly intervals, offers the opportunity to earn the necessary number of points to maintain 7th place in the team standings. I am confident that we have everything we need to end the season with good results.”
