Oscar Piastri is confidently spending his debut season in Formula 1 behind the wheel of McLaren. In Qatar, the Australian racer achieved his first serious success: he won the sprint on Saturday. McLaren’s excellent form at the Losail circuit was confirmed by Lando Norris, who finished third.
Oscar Piastri (1st): “I’m very happy! The race was very exciting: when I saw the riders at the start on soft tires, I thought we had problems. But the good thing is that their tires wore out quite quickly.
The safety car was my friend today. At one point Max Verstappen was behind me, but I had good race speed. Today we had to spend a lot of time on the condition of the tires and following our opponents on other trains, but we did well.
When Max came second I thought I was going to have problems, but like I said I had a good pace. The first victory in the sprint sounds great!”
Lando Norris (3rd): “First of all, I would like to congratulate Oscar and Max. As far as I’m concerned, the sprint turned out to be difficult due to a bad start. He made the task more difficult, but I was able to bounce back. The race turned out to be interesting, with many overtaking actions throughout the distance until the last lap.
Another podium for McLaren – a fantastic day for the team. Not the best start, but a good ending.”
