Max Verstappen: We need to improve our tire work

Max Verstappen set the fourth fastest time in the second practice of the British Grand Prix, two tenths behind the session leader, Carlos Sainz. Summing up on Friday, the Red Bull Racing driver noted that high tire wear could be an issue this weekend.

Max’s partner, Sergio Perez, posted the seventh fastest time and said the car’s behavior did not meet the team’s expectations.

Max Verstappen (3rd): “The second session turned out to be more difficult than it could have been due to the inability to work on a dry track in the first session. We had to, say, rely more on guesswork because we couldn’t rely on the data we usually get in the first session.

The situation isn’t ideal, but I don’t see a serious problem with this. We know what we need to work on, and we’ll work on it tonight. It may rain tomorrow, the conditions will change, but that’s okay.

Friday’s results aren’t great, but they aren’t that bad. We need to improve in some areas, for example in the tire work, but we can do it. Tires wear quickly on this track due to the fast cornering, so it will be difficult to control the rubber condition this weekend.

Ferrari speed? They are fast every weekend, so their result didn’t surprise me.”

Sergio Perez (7th): “I didn’t have the best session. The behavior of the car is very different from what we expected after preparing for the podium in the simulator. It is necessary to understand what it is related to. I could only do a few laps in race mode at the end of the session – not the best start to the weekend as we had to catch up.

The fact that I failed to work properly in the first training also made the task more difficult. In the fast corners of Silverstone you have to have confidence in the car – once I can get that confidence back, everything will be fine. We understand what the problems are – mainly with aerodynamics, but I can’t give more details.

The Ferrari looks fast, but nothing special. I hope we can improve in qualifying.”
