Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen posted the fifteenth and nineteenth fastest times respectively in qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix. Both Haas drivers explained their results by not being able to find the optimal car settings during a one-hour training session.
Nico Hulkenberg (15th): “Hectic qualifying in which we were not fast enough due to balance problems. Due to the sprint format, we had little time during training and we could not find the settings that suited me.
Tomorrow we have qualifying again, but under different conditions – during the day, when it will be much warmer. Surprises can happen, so it is important to be prepared for anything and respond quickly.”
Kevin Magnussen (19th): “Losail is a new song for me, and getting to know its features turned out to be more difficult than I had hoped. The circuit is quite fast and as I had not driven it before, it took me some time to get used to it. I have the potential to play a lot.
It’s a long weekend ahead, but I’m obviously disappointed with nineteenth place. We will try to do better next session.”
Gunther Steiner, team manager: “After a relatively good training with Nico, we had hoped for a better result in qualifying. As for Kevin, he had no speed, both in practice and qualifying.
Tomorrow we have another qualifying session, this time before the sprint, so it’s important to understand why in today’s qualifying we took a step back from practice and lost momentum. I hope we come back stronger on Saturday.”
