The conflict between FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 management is obvious, although it is not made public.
Mohamed Ben Sulayem: “The FIA’s aim is to attract new manufacturers to Formula 1. We cannot refuse them. I dream of an American team with the support of an American car giant, with an American driver and an American power plant. And in a few years I would like to repeat this scheme with a Chinese manufacturer.
I heard from Formula 1 management that twelve teams are too many, that there is not enough space on the circuits. But recently we hosted Brad Pitt’s team for the filming of the film. Normally, circuits have at least twelve sections for twelve teams. What we should be concerned about is not the number of teams, but the excessive number of races. Formula 1 needs more teams and fewer Grands Prix.
The FIA is not a service provider. We own Formula 1, we put it under temporary management, but we remain the owners. This must be remembered. I don’t want to give Liberty Media and FOM an ultimatum, but they must respect the spirit of our sport.
Can Andretti compete in Formula 1 with FIA approval, but without Liberty Media’s permission? Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, but yes, it is possible.”
