Today Formula 1 announced the extension of the contract with Pirelli for the supply of tires. In addition to the Italian company, Japan’s Bridgestone also participated in the tender for the supply of tires, but was rejected. Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali said the championship had not considered the possibility of having both companies supply tires as it would lead to a significant increase in costs.
Stefano Domenicali: “This issue has been resolved together with the FIA to ensure that the value of the ecosystem is not compromised. High costs are one of the reasons why we left the tire competition. A large number of tests and investigations had to be carried out with two suppliers, which was very expensive. That is why we have arrived at the current version.
Cost control is very important now, so it is premature to think about the return of tire competition in the future. This topic is not on the agenda.
If we can control costs in the future, but why not? But as I said: at the moment we are not discussing this matter with the FIA or the teams.”
