During practice at Silverstone, the Williams cars were in different configurations: Alex Albon’s FW44 was equipped with a whole host of technical innovations, while Nicholas Latifi worked on the track in the previous version of the car.
Dave RobsonChief Race Engineer: “It’s a bit of a shame that the weather prevented us from doing anything useful in the first practice, but by the second session the track had dried up, which allowed us to start evaluating the effectiveness of new elements.
There is a lot to analyze in the evening, but despite the strong wind we saw some encouraging signs. Unfortunately, Alex, attacking the curb, damaged the bottom at the rear of the car, preventing him from driving a long series of circles with a large fuel load.
We have yet to figure out how to adjust the settings to get the most out of the new products, and now this is our main task. However, based on the weather forecast, it is likely that the weather will seriously affect track work tomorrow, so we also need to pay attention to preparing for the rain qualifying.
Alex Albon (14th): “The program for the day was shortened because the first practice was accompanied by rain, so we worked less on track than we wanted to because we had to test a new version of the aerodynamic body kit.
In the second practice we had to work longer on the track and although not everything was in order in this respect, we managed to achieve more or less normal behavior of the car, and this is already a step forward.
We have to keep looking for fine adjustments, trying to make changes for the better, but a good foundation has been laid, so we are moving forward and tomorrow we will see what we can achieve.”
Nicholas Latific (20th): “The first day at Silverstone is not very eventful, because the weather meant we missed the first session, but all teams were on an equal footing.
This meant that the value of the second practice only increased as it may be the only session before qualifying when we had the opportunity to work on a dry track.
We completed the program while the complexity was minimal. But the strong wind made it difficult for everyone. We have gathered good information, we know which way to go and on Saturday we will see what results we can count on.”
