In 2023, Mick Schumacher visits the Formula 1 stages as a reserve racer for Mercedes, works on the simulator and keeps a diary on the team website in which he talks about his work.
Hello! I’m back with a new diary chapter. The last time I posted was before the summer holidays, and it’s been a while! During the season the break becomes more important as more races appear on the calendar. Some teams don’t have the ability to rotate personnel, so the ability to rest is critical.
I really enjoyed the break. This is a great opportunity to take a break from racing and prepare for the second half of the season. On vacation I try not only to relax, but also to do something new, because this is the best way to shift my attention. However, this is all individual.
During the last European rounds I spent the last two nights during the race weekend working on the simulator to help the team. We have already completed stages in Singapore, Japan and Qatar, but the other races will also be away races. Between the Japanese Grand Prix and the Qatar Grand Prix I spent time in Tokyo and Australia. Now I’m looking forward to the next races.
Throughout the year I get to know the team better and I get to know my colleagues better. I knew some of them before I joined the team, which helped. Moreover, it is nice to meet people who worked with my father.
The work on the simulator throughout the season has paid off: we have made good progress in developing the car. The last two night sessions on the simulator were quite tiring, but the reward was the results on the track. We are working hard and trying to do as much as possible to help the team in the remaining days of the weekend.
In all remaining Grand Prix I will be on track all weekend. I am the team’s reserve driver and must be ready to drive immediately if Lewis Hamilton or George Russell cannot perform. If I go back to Brackley to work on the simulator I won’t be able to do it.
I do most of my simulator work with the W14. We learned many new things that will be useful in the future. Development of the W15 started a long time ago and is still ongoing. Everything we learn about this year’s car can be used next season. Everyone in the team is working as hard as they can to start next year with the best car possible.
In the background, work continues on my plans for 2024. I continue to explore my options to see exactly what direction we can go and how we can meet our obligations and things like that. All this takes time.
As always, thank you for your support, kind words and comments. I hope you enjoyed today’s diary. I’ll be back with another post later this year.
