Qualifying in Formula 2 started at Silverstone half an hour after the end of Formula 1 practice on Friday, so the track was already in more or less “normal” condition, ie. covered with a layer of used rubber.
When the youth series riders hit the track on soft tires, they started showing good lap results almost immediately. First of 1 min. Felipe Drugovich, the leader of the individual classification, managed to get out in 40 seconds, but almost immediately his result was improved first by Yuri Vips and then by Jack Duane. But Frederic Vesti was the first to show a really competitive time, having completed a circle in 1 minute. 39.611 seconds, improving Duane’s result by three tenths at a time.
Not without a departure: Enzo Fittipaldi did not keep the car on track, although he avoided serious problems and limited himself to jumping the curb and bumps in the safety zone before returning to the tarmac.
Drugovic tried to improve Vesti’s time, but on the second fast lap he made a mistake in the last corner and struggled to control the car. But Vips returned to the first line of protocol, but not for long, as his result was blocked almost immediately by Logan Sargent, a 21-year-old American, Carlin racer, who completed a lap with an impressive time: 1 min. 38,946 seconds.
The first half of qualifying was over, everyone returned to the pits for fresh tires. At the same time, only Jehan Daruwala had a good result among the riders of the first three of the individual classification – he climbed to the second line of the protocol, and for example Theo Purscher was only seventh so far and Drugovic, the leader of the championship, came not above the 11th line.
With 10 minutes to go before the end of the session, everyone returned to the track and the battle for pole resumed.
Sargent, a Williams youth driver, continued to demonstrate the seriousness of his claims to pole position, improving his own result by another half a second and, of course, remaining in first place. But Vesti went to the second, and Drugovich showed the third time of the session.
It is clear that all participants in the session tried to achieve Sargent’s result, but none succeeded. Drugovich, in particular, made another attempt, but it generally ended in a turnaround.
Qualifying time was up and you could say that Logan Sargent, for whom this is his first full season in Formula 2, has taken his first pole position. This means he will start in first position in Sunday’s race of the weekend and 10th in tomorrow’s sprint, where a partially reversed starting order will be applied. But for today’s performance, he got two extra bonus points and somewhat cemented his position in 4th place in the individual standings.
Jehan Daruvala starts Saturday’s sprint from pole position and today shows the 10th result.
