The Mercedes chief engineer is cautiously optimistic about Friday’s results, as Lewis Hamilton showed the second time of the day on the updated car…
Andrew Shovlin: “There is a feeling that we have taken a step forward as we are usually far from the leaders on Fridays.
Tomorrow Ferrari and Red Bull will probably improve, but a good pace on a long series of laps makes us optimistic. Usually we give up about half a second on the circle or even seven or eight tenths, but here it is not. Maybe it’s the track that fits our car.
We still have a lot of work to do, the build is still going strong, but I hope these new items will point us in the right direction. In the ninth corner there are problems with the build-up, in the 15th we will cover them in more detail when we meet at the briefing. Hopefully we’ll add more tomorrow.”
