Zack Brown can’t imagine a situation where one of the teams in the championship starts skipping races due to the fact that he’s used up the budget cap and calls the conversation on the subject “empty threats.”
The leaders of a number of teams are calling for action to adjust the budget cap due to high inflation and rising costs, including logistics, which were difficult to imagine a few years ago when Formula 1’s financial regulation was drafted.
McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has already acknowledged that it will be impossible to meet the $140 million spending cap, and Christian Horner has warned that if an adjustment to this cap cannot be negotiated, many teams will simply have to skip races.
“We will all race because there are contracts that oblige us to do so,” said Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing. “This is what our sponsors expect. I can’t imagine a scenario where teams can finish the season ahead of schedule. I don’t believe in it at all, it’s just empty threats.

However, not all teams are behind the idea of adjusting budgets. Haas F1 chief Gunther Steiner has spoken out against this and Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur has suggested that teams wary of overspending should close the wind tunnels.
Zack Brown does not share this view: “I don’t understand because we are all dealing with rising costs, we all have the same problem. Therefore, all teams will exceed the budget cap by approximately the same amount. If someone doesn’t, it’s probably because they’re trying to take advantage of the situation for themselves.”
