RM Sotheby’s recently held an auction offering a unique collection of Nigel Mansell trophies, which raised around £2 million. But now the same auction house is offering for sale 59 lots that are in some way linked to the legacy of another famous British champion, Graham Hill.
Hill won the title twice, in 1962 and 1968, won the Indy 500 in 1966 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972 and remains the only driver in the history of world motor racing to win the so-called “Triple Crown”. “
Experts consider the 1962 championship winning cup to be one of the most valuable trophies, which is being offered at public auction for the first time – its estimate is 35 thousand pounds. The 1969 Monaco Grand Prix winner’s trophy is also expected to fetch at least £50,000. In total, Hill won races at the legendary city circuit five times during his career, for which he was nicknamed “Mr. Monaco”.
Other interesting lots include racing helmets of the two-time world champion, his overalls and a glass trophy for the victory at Le Mans: on June 11, 1972, Graham Hill won the marathon at the Sarthe ring, together with Henri Pescarolo on the wheel of the French sports prototype Matra -Simca MS670 with a 3-liter V12 engine, also made by Matra engineers.
The auction takes place as part of the London auction and starts on November 4.
