At the end of August, the Mercedes team announced a two-year contract extension with Lewis Hamilton, but until then several rumors had appeared in the press about the future of the seven-time world champion, including his possible move to Ferrari.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton met with Ferrari president John Elkann but did not negotiate a move to the Scuderia.
Toto Wolff: “We postponed the contract announcement a bit, but it was immediately clear to us that Lewis would remain in the team. He and I are always very open with each other, and a while ago he said to me, “I saw John Elkann eating, but you should know I’m not going anywhere.”
When the press started writing about a possible transfer, Lewis said to me: “Toto, I don’t negotiate. I don’t understand where these stories come from.” Lewis signed the contract six months later [после начала переговоров], and there were marketing and legal reasons for that. Personally, I haven’t had the slightest doubt.
We also signed a two-year contract with George Russell. He grew up at Mercedes and he is the future of our team, the next generation after Hamilton. We are happy”.
