The Haas VF-22 is capable of good speed, as Kevin Magnussen has shown time and again, but the US team missed the opportunity to earn points for several reasons – this was due to technical difficulties, mistakes and not the best tactics.
While the Haas F1 is in penultimate, 9th place in the Constructors’ Championship, he has just 15 points to his name, although there could clearly be more. According to Günther Steiner, team leader, she is able to overcome these negative factors, also his subordinates must act more decisively and confidently.
He refers to a tactical miscalculation made in Canada when Haas’ strategists decided not to call Magnussen to the pits when the safety car came onto the track towards the end of the race. Had the Dane got new tires he probably could have finished in higher positions instead of 17th.
“There is always room for improvement and we have to do better tactically,” admitted Steiner. “It’s not that we don’t understand this well and don’t know how to act, but sometimes we hesitate instead of making decisions. We doubt their correctness a little, and the more mistakes we make, the more we doubt.
At some point, however, everything should return to normal. This requires good results and the right decisions – this is the direction in which we must work.
As for reliability issues, Ferrari is dealing with these issues. They’re not happy when we’re in trouble, and it’s clear they’re in a similar situation themselves. Scuderia cars have the exact same engines, the same MGU-K engine generators, and any of our teams can malfunction.
Something always happens to us, everyone understands that we should have had 10-15 points more, but we missed them. However, there is no point in speaking in the subjunctive mood, and we can only try to maintain high morale and remain optimistic. Still, our riders in Canada showed 5th and 6th results in qualifying, and everything went well that day.
But in our case, people lack self-confidence after two difficult years, and everyone feels that. No one wants to make mistakes, but sometimes it turns out you’re not doing right either. It may sound weird, but that’s what happens when you have to make decisions.
And they have to be taken in seconds. But sometimes you feel numb and indecisive because you’re not in the best shape and trying not to make a mistake. Then the thought arises that it is better not to make any decisions at all, when that is actually not right.
