Formula 1 and the FIA are working to ensure that the weight of the next generation of cars, the transition of which is planned for 2026, is significantly reduced. The cars are so heavy now because of the weight of the hybrid powertrains and the switch to 18-inch wheels and tires a few years ago, but there are many other factors.
But engine manufacturers are already developing new powertrains that will make the hybrid part more efficient and powerful, and it is expected that around 50% of the total power will be generated by the MGU-K engine generator. At the same time, they will no longer have such a complex unit as the MGU-H engine generator.
The final version of the technical regulations is not yet ready, but it is known that reducing the overall weight of cars is one of the main tasks that Formula 1 legislators are trying to solve.
World Championship cars have never been as heavy as they are today – this year their weight is set at 796kg, but in a few years they should be a thing of the past.

We are aware that there are many innovations in the pipeline and many challenges that need to be solved.
One of them is obviously related to the weight of the cars, and we are doing that, also together with the Pirelli company we are looking for a solution that will help reduce this.
This is a very important, but not the only factor; there are other aspects that the FIA is working on when determining the configuration of the future car. They all have their own meaning, so by joining forces we try to achieve the right result, creating the most efficient machine.
The Federation is coordinating all this, so that by the end of spring next year we will finally have regulations formulated. We have months of intensive work ahead of us, in which we all participate, to ensure that the new generation of cars are as fast, safe and efficient as possible, and that racing with their participation is as interesting as possible.”
