According to Liam Lawson, he already felt he would have to say goodbye to the dream of Formula 1, but his services were in high demand when Daniel Ricciardo was injured during the race weekend in the Netherlands.
Acting as Red Bull’s reserve driver, Lawson took the Australian’s place behind the wheel of the AlphaTauri car, performing very well in the few races he managed. Most importantly, he earned points in Singapore, and this Grand Prix is considered one of the most difficult stages of the season.
However, Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda will continue to drive for AlphaTauri next year and Liam will remain a reserve for both Red Bull teams. At the same time, Christian Horner promised that the promising New Zealander will certainly be on the candidate list for 2025.
“There is always a lot of talking. But no matter how positive they are, and regardless of what people generally say, personally I won’t be satisfied until I have a signed contract in my hands,” Liam told New Zealand news agency SEN. – But I don’t have it yet.
But you have to look at it all from this angle: you see, just two months ago I was not considered a serious candidate for Formula 1. To be honest, I even felt like this was already starting to slip away. I believe that the opportunity that has now been given to me has helped me a lot, and I certainly have prospects for the future.
But for now, nothing is guaranteed for me, to be honest. Next year I will remain a reserve driver, that’s all.”
Liam will be in the Ostnia paddock in this capacity, but will then head to Japan for the Super Formula series final on the last weekend of October. Lawson is in second place in the individual rankings and has a real chance of competing for the title.
“I hope that I can use the experience I have gained in Formula 1 in some way,” said the 21-year-old driver. – Of course it is also good that I recently raced in Suzuka, but for my Japanese rivals this track is like home, and they have been racing there since they were young.
Therefore, I have no doubt that it will be very difficult for me. I foresee that I will have to adapt to the Super Formula car again, because in recent months my entire life has been completely dominated by Formula 1…’
