Cloudy. To rain. Air +14С, track +20…19С
Nine out of ten teams – all except Haas F1 – have prepared numerous novelties for the British Grand Prix, and qualifying at Silverstone allowed us to appreciate the change in the balance of power.
On Friday, rain prevented the first practice, but the second was held on a dry track – Carlos Sainz showed the best time and Max Verstappen led the protocol on Saturday morning.
Pirelli traditionally brought the toughest setups to the podium – C1, C2 and C3 as Hard, Medium and Soft, but slicks were not necessary during qualifying. It started to rain, raincoats and umbrellas appeared in the stands full of fans.
In the first session the riders lined up on intermediate tires at the exit of the pits to do a quick lap before the road surface got too wet, but there was already a lot of water. Alonso and Ocon didn’t leave with everyone else and stayed in the pits for a few minutes. Bottas turned around without affecting the car.
The rain stopped, the asphalt’s condition gradually improved, as did the results. Racers worked in a series of circles. Verstappen showed the best time with a lap time of 1:39.129. Albon, Magnussen, Vettel, Schumacher and Stroll dropped out. Latifi went into the second session for the first time in the season – on the previous version of the Williams car, and his partner Albon couldn’t get on the seriously updated one.
In the second session riders again set off on the intermediate rubber. It was raining, there was no way to switch to slicks, but the tires effectively cleared the water and at the beginning the track got faster with each lap, then the rain increased.
Verstappen flew to the grass and returned to the pits. Latifi went off the track in the third corner and continued on. It was impossible to beat the time, the first five remained in the boxes, the rest kept fighting.
Verstappen’s result was again the best – 1:40.655. Gasly, Bottas, Tsunoda, Riccardo and Okon dropped out of the fight. Latifi reached the final for the first time this season.
In the final all left again on the intermediate tires. The track was smooth. Verstappen crashed on a fast lap with no impact on the car – his lap was cancelled, with Leclerc taking the lead with a time of 1:44.844.
Latifi turned around in the first corner, but he kept moving.
Verstappen led the scoresheet with 1:42.996, but first Sainz and Leclerc went faster, then Max recaptured the front line, but Sainz beat him by 72 thousandths.
†
Carlos Sainz won qualifying at Silverstone and took the first pole of his career.
Sainz and Verstappen share the front row of the grid, Leclerc and Perez start from the second, Hamilton and Norris from the third.
