Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto praised Carlos Sainz for winning British Grand Prix qualifying, but added that the advantage could go to Red Bull Racing on Sunday if the race went dry.
Q: You should be happy Carlos took pole?
Mattia Binotto: I congratulate Carlos – he deserved this result. With each stage he feels more confident in the car. Carlos had a great weekend in Canada, except for qualifying. Confidence allows a rider to remain calm and today Carlos was calm despite difficult conditions. He showed patience and rode a good circle at the right time.
Q: You mentioned the podium in Canada. Do you think that race allowed Carlos to boost his confidence?
Mattia Binotto: Canada stage was important to him – qualifying as well as the race. In the race he felt confident and qualifying helped to understand what he was doing wrong, why he made a mistake and failed to take pole in a situation where he could.
As I said, today he kept calm, didn’t worry and did what he had to do in conditions very similar to qualifying in Canada. I think he came to conclusions after the last leg and showed again that he can learn from his mistakes.
Q: Did you expect the car to be this fast on a wet track?
Mattia Binotto: During Saturday’s practice on a dry track, Max Verstappen was very fast and we were a bit behind. If the race takes place on a dry track, we will see a very different picture than we saw in qualifying.
We know how quickly the weather can change at Silverstone, so it’s important to stay focused and develop the right strategy. I don’t know yet how many pit stops we will have and what tires we will start on. So far, it’s clear that controlling tire wear, especially the front left, will be key.
Q: Given the situation in the championship, do you still think you have a chance to fight for the title for Red Bull Racing?
Mattia Binotto: I think so. We only won two races, but we were in the lead at the start of the season and if there were no reliability issues, the situation in the championship would have been different. The battle is very tight, so nothing has been decided yet. Reliability issues don’t just concern us, but rivals as well. We will continue to attack and see what results this will lead to.
