Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finished second and fourth respectively in qualifying for the British Grand Prix. The team expects to overtake rivals of Ferrari in Sunday’s race.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “Good qualification. I was comfortable in the car on the wet track, and the 360-degree turn in the final on the new set was the new tire warming technology! (laughs) Overall, we’ve done well and our car is fast.
The final was a bit like a lottery, especially on a wet track. I couldn’t add because of the yellow flags – I think it cost me the post.
As you can see the battle ahead is very tight, the Ferraris are fast, but I hope we can finish ahead of them tomorrow. The car handles well in wet and dry conditions, so if there are no problems tomorrow, we have a good chance of winning.”
Sergio Perez (4th): “Good result in changeable weather conditions. Of course I wanted more, so I’m not completely satisfied, but we can fight. The result isn’t perfect, but I’m not too upset, because in the final of the last two laps I was hindered – maybe I would have taken a higher position otherwise.
We discovered the source of the problems on Friday, so we will be more competitive in the race. Tomorrow it is important to show a fast pace and stay in the fight – then everything can change. We have made progress and I am sure we will make it difficult for Ferrari. It won’t be easy, but we’ll fight.”
Christian Horner, Team Principal: “Both drivers qualified well in very difficult conditions. We had some bad luck with the yellow flags, so Max lost three or four tenths, but we are happy with Sergio’s front row and second row position. Good result after such a session.
If the race takes place on a dry track, the strategy and degradation of the rubber are decisive. This year, the cars can keep up with the opposition, which is crucial for the Becketts. However, if the beautiful British summer continues tomorrow, the weather could change quickly. I hope we can compete with Ferrari anyway.
Congratulations to Carlos Sainz. He performed fantastically on the wet track when he was still chasing us. Today he did a great job and deserved pole.”
