Formula E: Mortara wins the race and takes the lead

Edoardo Mortara won the round in Morocco, held on the city circuit in Marrakesh, leading the individual standings of the World Electric Car Championship. This season, the Swiss rider of the Venturi Racing team took the podium for the fifth time.

Mortara took the lead after the first quarter of the distance thanks to a competent tactic, ahead of António Felix da Costa, who started from pole position, and the Portuguese said before the start that his job was to help Jean-Eric Vergne , his teammate in DS Techeetah, who is more likely to win a third championship title.

Just as Vergne was ahead of Mitch Evans, Jaguar’s works team driver, another championship contender, the DS Techeetah drivers swapped positions with about 10 minutes to go. But while performing this maneuver, Mortara managed to punch a small gap and it was not possible to overtake the Swiss Vernu.

At the same time, Da Costa was driving close behind his partner and asked the team for permission to be ahead of his partner on the radio to try and fight for the win. When he was given the go-ahead he took second place but there were only a few minutes left before the end of the race, and although Antonia almost overtook the leader, there was nothing he could do to prevent Mortara from being knocked out. be the first to cross the finish line.

At the same time, Vergne’s car battery started to overheat, he lost speed and on the last lap of the race he was overtaken by Mitch Evans, taking the podium for the fifth time this season.

The top five was completed by Lucas di Grassi, Mortara’s partner, who also overtook Nick de Vries, the Mercedes driver and reigning Formula E champion, on the final lap.

Stoffel Vandorn, also driving for Mercedes, had problems with the brakes in qualifying, so he only started from 20th position, but the Belgian bravely pushed through and finished eighth. If he led the personal classification before the Moroccan stage of the championship, he has now fallen to 3rd place, but at least this can be seen as a minimization of losses. And in the lead after the first ten races of the season, as already mentioned, Edoardo Mortara.

At the same time, he is ahead of Mitch Evans, who occupies the 4th line, by only 14 points, and from Vergne, who is in 2nd place, separates him even less – 11 points, so the fierce battle for victory in the championship will continue and the alignment of forces in the electrical series can change with each successive phase.

There are only three left before the end of the season, but they are all doubles. The next round of the championship will take place in New York in two weeks.
