During qualifying at Silverstone, Guanyu Zhou overtook Alfa Romeo teammate Valtteri Bottas for the third consecutive Grand Prix.
Frederic Vasseur, Team Principal: “Track conditions were difficult, the rain stopped and started again, but Guanyu had an excellent result, although this is only the second rain qualifying for him in Formula 1 – and he reached the final in the second Grand Prix of Price in a row. Ninth place is his best result of his career, he has a good chance of scoring points in tomorrow’s race.
The day was more difficult for Valtteri. He had a good first part of qualifying, but in the second he couldn’t warm up the tires and stayed 12th. However, we know that the car has to be fast in the race and expect to regain a few places, especially when it is dry. The goal is to earn points again with two cars.”
Guanyu Zhou (9th): “Qualifying was difficult, but for a beginner I didn’t do too bad! On Saturday the conditions were different from yesterday, but I was confident and improved with each lap.
It was especially difficult between the second and third parts of qualifying, when there was a lot of standing water, but I was able to keep the car on track, make the most of everything I had – and I can be satisfied with the job done.
It’s really nice to go to the qualifiers twice in a row, I’m growing and making progress – and I’m very happy about it. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, the race should be on a dry track, I have the opportunity to earn some points – this is the main goal.
Valtteri Bottas (12th): “The day turned out to be difficult for me. The conditions were constantly changing, every lap the track conditions were different. The first session went well, but in the second session there was more water on the track and I could barely keep the tires warm. It was like a downward spiral – the car skidded, lost speed and the tires cooled even more.
However, I will start 12th, not far from the top 10, we have a dry race tomorrow and I’m sure I can bounce back.”
