At Silverstone, Fernando Alonso reached the qualifying final for the fourth time in a row and set the seventh fastest time. After the session, the Alpine rider indicated that the result on the wet track could have been better. His teammate Esteban Ocon qualified 15th due to battery problems.
Fernando Alonso (7th): “Today the result could have been higher. Unfortunately I couldn’t squeeze everything out of the car in the final. In the final I was the first to start a fast lap – it worked out well, but I started the last fast lap with a nearly flat battery, so I couldn’t unleash the car’s full potential. I feel like I could qualify in the top five.
We don’t know if it’s going to rain tomorrow or not – let’s see if we can make the most of the starting position and earn points. The car drove well on a wet surface and the data collected shows that we took a good step forward this weekend thanks to the new products.”
Esteban Ocon (15th): “Today we had one of the bad days. I was hampered by battery power loss at the start of the second part of qualifying, so I only showed 15th fastest time – not the best starting position. However, I am positive because I have already earned points by starting from lower places. The goal for tomorrow is to finish in the top ten.
We will get to the root of the problems – I believe the team will fix everything and we will be in good shape in the race. You can overtake at Silverstone, so I’m taking every opportunity to get a good result.”
Otmar Safnauer, Team Principal: “Weekend at Silverstone is quite difficult due to changeable weather. We are slightly disappointed with the qualifying results as our drivers like to drive in the rain and the car is competitive on a wet track, as we saw in Canada two weeks ago.
Fernando had the potential to qualify a few positions higher if he put in a fast lap at the right time. Esteban was out of luck – his battery was too cold to demonstrate optimal efficiency. However, we are looking ahead – points will be awarded on Sunday, tomorrow we have a long race, in which both riders will undoubtedly have opportunities to regain positions.
We are happy with the updated car – the team was able to evaluate the new items based on the data collected on a dry track this weekend. In the race we aim to earn points with two cars – I see no reason to prevent us from achieving this goal.
