We’ve already discussed rumors that Sergio Perez could lose his seat at Red Bull Racing for next season if he doesn’t reach second place in the individual standings by the end of 2023. Before the Austin round, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner made several statements to put an end to such speculation.
Christian Horner: “We have not discussed this or even thought about such a scenario. Sergio is our driver and we want to give him the greatest support. We think he can take second place in the individual competition, although there are still many races to go and he faces strong opponents.
The team invited Sergio because of his experience and ability to handle pressure. He did a lot for us in 2021 and 2022 and contributed to winning the Constructors’ Championship last season and this season.
We know what he is capable of, even if we haven’t seen it in the last few races. The team supports him and wants him to return to the form he had at the start of the season. Sergio is having a difficult season, but being Max’s teammate is not easy. We cannot forget this mental challenge.
Speed in qualifying is Sergio’s weak point, but we know what he is capable of in the races. This year the team has won six doubles, he has won two races and is second in the drivers’ standings, 30 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton. It is not too bad!
Last week, Perez worked for three days in a simulator, something he had never done before. These three days helped identify the root cause of the problems that had plagued him in Qatar and Japan. I think he has made a lot of progress. I hope Sergio comes to the fore this weekend.”
