Video: Lap around the Austin circuit with Sergio Perez

Red Bull has prepared a video dedicated to the upcoming American Grand Prix: Sergio Perez makes a lap around the circuit in Austin on a simulator. Moreover, he does this silently, and Josh Idow, who competes for the Red Bull Racing Esports team in virtual racing, comments on what is happening in the frame.

Josh Idow: “Before Turn 1 the track goes uphill and there is heavy braking. We take the corner in 2nd gear and as you can see the apex there is blind, so it is very difficult to approach it correctly. But here you have to rely more on muscle memory and practice passing this turn. The more you experience it, the more you will get used to it.

Then you have to prepare for very fast chicanes, where the bends follow each other; in modern Formula 1 cars they have to be driven almost at full speed and actively use the curbs.

We go to the right, then to the left, and you see that Sergio has to adjust the trajectory slightly, because before the next bend the car is towed to the outside edge.

After this the descent begins and here you must prepare for the next left turn, which leads to a long straight stretch. We brake 100 meters before the bend and here we have to avoid the inner curb, because the car can lose its stability.

The exit of this corner is very important, because after that the long straight begins. On this track the car may have a tendency to oversteer, but in the simulator we can use the digital technology at our disposal to tackle this problem. These technologies help determine the best approach to adjust settings.

At the end of the straight we slow down for the next left turn, and this time we have to avoid hitting the curb. The braking point is just before the 100 meter mark: we pass the 12th bend in 2nd gear and here you can already use the curb as you want. Here it does not affect the stability of the car, but we do get the opportunity to prepare for the next combination of corners.

For the next left turn we shift the car to the right and leave it very wide to maintain the maximum possible speed, and we take the next set of right turns at full speed, actively using the curbs.

When leaving the last corner we activated DRS – and so we drove a lap around the circuit in Austin.”
