Pirelli considers the strategy of two pit stops to be optimal for the race at Silverstone, but there are several options for its implementation.
The fastest option is to start on Medium, the middle section on Hard, and switch back to Medium. The advantage of this strategy is the use of two different compositions at the start of the race, which gives more freedom in further actions.
Those who do not have a second set of Medium tires can use the Medium-Hard-Soft option, which can be turned into a Medium-Hard one-stop strategy where tire wear must be checked very carefully if necessary.
It all depends on what tires the riders have left and the weather. It is expected to be dry, but the cooler the temperature, the better the softer formulations will work.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “The intermediate tire was not designed to tackle aquaplaning, but it worked well in difficult conditions on Saturday, allowing the riders to accelerate to close to 300 km/h on wet surfaces and long stretches on dry surfaces.
We expect that if there is no rain in the race, the main grid will be Medium, and the best strategy is two pit stops.”
