Mercedes removed most of the sensors from the car in an effort to save weight in the first two races of the season, but reinstalled them in Melbourne. Mercedes chief strategist James Vowles said the lack of sensors caused the team to lose valuable information, the lack of which was not compensated by the speed gain.
James Vowles: “We had to collect data to get a good picture of the situation. In the first two races we removed the sensors in an attempt to reduce the weight of the car, but it turned out to be a very painful decision. After the first two races we realized we had too many questions and the team doesn’t have the information to answer them.
In a typical year, we don’t even consider taking the sensors out of the car because they let us know what’s going on. However, it’s an unusual season now, so you have to somehow solve the problem of overweight.”
