George Russell believes that the new products that the Mercedes team has prepared for the Austin round will allow a slight improvement, but does not expect this to significantly change the capabilities of the W14 car.
George Russell: “Our car will have a modernized underbody and this is the last major update for this season, after which the team will turn its full attention to preparations for 2024. This is exactly what the team will be doing at the Brackley base – both the design department as well as anyone who does aerodynamic research.
Still, what we brought to Austin will only allow us to take a small step in the right direction, and we don’t expect anything fundamental to change for us. I think what we’ll experience this weekend is more focused on next year. However, after the Qatar stage we worked on the simulator for a few days and I can say that the impressions were not bad, so we are going in the right direction.
At the same time, we must admit that the McLaren team must now be considered among the favorites. She is doing exceptionally well and I think Lando was even faster than Max Verstappen on the circuit in Qatar. But maybe we’re not so surprised by this, because we recently realized why this team has made such amazing progress.
It’s hard to say how things will go this weekend, but our main goal is to stay ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship and do everything we can to make sure we have a very fast car next year.”
