Prema driver Arthur Leclerc won the Formula 3 race at Silverstone on Sunday. Carlin’s Zach O’Sullivan and Leclerc’s teammate Oliver Berman joined him on the podium.
Pole holder Zach O’Sullivan held the lead from the start and at the back of the battle for fourth place between Zane Maloney and Berman there was light contact, causing Maloney’s car to flip over.
In another out of ten incident, Franco Colapinto went off the track, depleting the safety car. At that point Arthur Leclerc overtook O’Sullivan for the lead in Stowe. Fearing a possible penalty for overtaking under yellow flags, the team asked Arthur to return the lead to Zak before the restart.
The race resumed on lap four – in the top five everyone held their positions and behind them Kush Maini left the track wide and rolled back past the top ten. Saturday’s race winner Isaac Hajjar passed Kaylen Frederik for sixth.
On lap six, Arthur Leclair launched a successful attack on O’Sullivan – the drivers went through several corners side by side, but the Prema rep had the acceleration advantage from turn seven.
On lap eight, Hajjar attacked Jack Crawford – the cars hit the wheels in the first corner, Jack went off the track and rolled back from fifth to eighth.
On lap 9, Hunter Yini fell back to last after a spin in the last corner as he tried to avoid a head-on collision between Roman Stanek and Grégoura Sosi. Gregoire crashed into Roman and they both returned to the pits. Sosi was able to continue the race, but Stanek’s car was damaged – the Czech driver retired.
On lap ten, the safety car again left the track due to the gravel crash of Rafael Villagomes and Nazim Azman in turn ninth. Villagomez attacked Azman unsuccessfully and crashed into the opponent’s rear wheel. The stewards considered the incident a racing incident and did not punish anyone.
The race resumed on lap fifteen. The leaders kept their positions, Victor Marten passed Kaylen Frederik in the battle for eighth place. On lap nineteen, Jack Crawford overtook Johnny Edgar for sixth.
On the penultimate lap, Oliver Berman overtook Chao Collet for third. On the final lap, Berman nearly overtook O’Sullivan, but Zach finished a moment ahead of his opponent.
Arthur Leclerc took the race to its first win of the season. Jack Crawford, who finished sixth, got an extra point for best lap. The next round of Formula 3 will take place in the Austrian Spielberg in a week.
