We wrote that the FIA World Motorsport Council recently approved an increase in the maximum fine amount in Formula 1 from 250 thousand to one million euros, and we are talking about all participants – both teams and drivers.
Mercedes driver George Russell thinks this amount is disproportionate to the income of most racers…
George Russell: “A fine of one million euros for a driver is unthinkable. In my first year in Formula 1 I earned a five-figure salary and paid six figures for a coach, an assistant and flights.
This is approximately the situation for 25% of cyclists. We do what we love, so we don’t complain, but if you take a racer who is forced to spend more than 100,000 euros a year on work and give him a 1 million fine, I don’t know what will happen .
We have repeatedly asked the FIA what these fines are for, but have still not received a response. I would like to clarify this.
If they really think that someone deserves a fine of one million euros and are going to invest that amount in the sport, perhaps one of the drivers with a high salary will be happy to pay it.”
