Toto Wolff acknowledged that the Mercedes team is still unable to understand the reasons that affect the build of the car at high speeds. This unpleasant phenomenon was also observed during qualifying, which prevented Lewis Hamilton and George Russell from competing for better results.
“Qualifying was normal until the last laps. I thought our car is good enough to fight for second or third position, said the head of the Mercedes team. – But it didn’t work out, so the result actually upset me, because I expected us to be faster.
We understood that this track probably suits us better because it is very flat, and in general the behavior of the car confirms this, only according to the results of the qualifying it is not visible. And yet our drivers still feel that the car is too stiff and subject to build-up.
The reasons for this phenomenon remain a mystery to us, although we have collected a large amount of information, and in the future this will allow us to understand everything, but so far we are not yet at the level we want to be.
Russell on the first set of tires had no build up at all and after 20 minutes on the second set of tires it started. We haven’t tried to study yet, maybe it’s somehow connected to the center of gravity, or what else could affect it? Perhaps this is an influence of unearthly origin?
But we haven’t been able to identify patterns yet. The intensity of the build changes very noticeably from one session to the next, and also depends on the specific set of rubber. And we can’t say how it’s affected by settings, wind, temperatures and conditions on the track as a whole. †
