Max Verstappen led the qualifying schedule for the US Grand Prix after the final fastest lap, but a few seconds later his result was canceled for exceeding the circuit boundaries at Turn 19. As a result, the reigning world champion will take sixth place at the start of Sunday’s race, but he was not very impressed by that.
Max’s Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez qualified ninth and complained of problems with the car’s balance.
Max Verstappen (6th): “I knew I would be on the limit at the 19th corner. I made a small mistake in the first corner, so I had to attack as hard as I could for the rest of the lap.
I didn’t even have understeer in Turn 19. I was just trying to get through the corner as quickly as possible and made a small mistake. This happens when you attack at the limit. It’s a shame that it happened this way, but it will be more fun on Sunday.
Of course, there isn’t much point in starting from the back, but moving forward depends on whether you have the pace. We’ll see, but right now we’re thinking about doing well on Saturday. We want to win the sprint and the race on Sunday. It’s a long weekend and a lot can happen, so I’m going to have fun.”
Sergio Perez (9th): “Not the easiest qualifying – I had problems with my balance, both in fast and slow corners. Today the gaps turned out to be minimal, so even a tenth could influence the result. I was unlucky, but I hope to perform better on Saturday and earn points in the sprint.
Unfortunately we can no longer change the car’s settings, but this is just one of the challenges we overcome during sprint weekends. We’ll see what results we get on Saturday – the wind direction could change, which could be in my favour.”
